379. CULTIVATION OF MORINGA, FOOD SECURITY

For its excellent climate, several regions of Guatemala and other countries are being devoted to the cultivation of moringa.

This plant projects many benefits to the communities where it is grown, mainly used in the diet of people and also has medicinal properties to cure common diseases.

Through training and knowledge acquired, more and more people have ventured into the cultivation of moringa, which has generated jobs for families and improve their living standards.

Obrajuelo community, Villa Canales, Guatemala, is one of the places where has proliferated the cultivation of this plant, where small producers are farming for their own consumption and selling the surplus.

The moringa is not a new plant, there are trees that have been found who are 80 years of living in Guatemala, some versions say that an Hindu brought the seed.

This plant is ideal for improving food and nutrition security of the population, contains many proteins and can be prepared in a variety of dishes, it is also advisable in the alimentation for  mothers who are breast feeding their children.

The places suitable for this crop are the lowlands, in Guatemala is being cultivated in Rio Dulce, Izabal, the South Coast and in Villa Canales.

We must seize the holy land and ideal climate for growing plants with such benefits in Guatemalan territory and different countries, which allows us to create jobs for families, improve their living conditions and also help us to improve food security and nutrition of the population
